This qualification aims to help Learners develop their knowledge and understanding of caring for those with dementia. Learners will cover areas such as person centered approaches, issues relating to the use of medication for those with dementia and the
importance of providing suitable activities.
This qualification does not infer competence in the work role but can be used to support the underpinning knowledge and understanding needed for those working in or towards a dementia care role.

The qualification covers precisely what dementia is, the most common types of dementia and the causal factors associated with them. Also explored is how others can have a positive impact on an individual with dementia through a variety of different techniques.

It is a knowledge "ONLY" qualification where understanding is required and demonstrated to enable an individual with dementia to experience a sense of security and well-being. The vital role of carers in such a situation is also covered

through  raising the awareness of the different communication needs and limitations of individuals with dementia in order to encourage positive interaction. The importance of equality, diversity and inclusion as ideas aspire to, which are also all important when practising the person-centred care approach.

The different behaviours individuals display once diagnosed with dementia and how to respond to particular types of behaviour is also covered in the qualification as well as exploring how to engage in social activities in order to enhance mental, physical and social well-being which can be beneficial to individuals with dementia.

This qualification is suitable for those who work with, or are intending to with, vulnerable adults and the elderly within the health and social care or healthcare sector.

This qualification is recognised by Awarding Body, it is also approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) .

Learners must achieve a total of 15 credits from the four mandatory units to achieve the RQF Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care.
The total Guided Learning Hours (GLH) for this qualification is 123 hours. The Total
Qualification Time (TQT) for the qualification is 150 hours. It can be completed in 8-12 weeks.

Progression opportunities
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to further
learning or training in health and social care, progressing to
qualifications such as:

  • Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with                              individuals who have dementia.
  • Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care.
  • Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a                        person centred approach.
  • Understand behaviour in the context of dementia.
  • Understand the benefits of engaging in activities in social care

  • Entry requirement
    :

    •There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
    • Learner must be aged 16 or above to undertake this qualification.

    •This qualification is suitable for those who work within the health and social care sectors.

    Method of Assessment:
    This qualification is internally assessed and quality assured by Centre staff then externally quality assured. This is a knowledge base qualification.

    Knowledge evidence includes but not limited to written work completed then submitted online via the e-portfolio system, assignment tasks and where possible reports from work can also be provided while considering GDPR as part of assessment.

    To achieve a ‘pass’ for a unit, you must provide evidence to demonstrate that you have fulfilled all the learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by all assessment criteria. Judgement that you have successfully fulfilled the assessment criteria is made by your allocated Assessor.
